Effects of Chlorella consumption on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase activity in ALDH2*2 Tg mice. Enzymatic histochemical staining for cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria of the gastrocnemius muscle cells 6 months after the initial administration of Chlorella in the diet. The scale bar indicates 100 μm (a–c). Gastrocnemius muscle cytochrome c oxidase activity was measured and is presented as the percent ratio (%) versus Wild type (d). A significant negative correlation was observed between gastrocnemius muscle cytochrome c oxidase activity and MDA and HAE levels in quadriceps muscle (e). Values are the mean ± SD, **p < 0.01: significant vs. Control; ## p < 0.01: significant vs. Wild type.
